Swegon Air Academy seminar in St. Petersburg: Part 2 – What if you could improve your school student’s results 30%, would you be interested?

Year after year Swegon Air Academy seminars in St. Petersburg are of a great success! This year on February 28, 2014, we held a seminar with topic on European Experience with Increase of Energy Efficiency in Buildings with our timeless speakers Ian Knight and David P. Wyon. This seminar was attended by 153 consultants from all over Russia.

Professor David P. Wyon gave his usual irrefutable presentation which takes highlights from his long career within IAQ and its effect on people’s performance.

Key points which got people’s attention were the graph showing the relationship of 3.5% improvement in school work performance with every degree in drop in temperature from 30°C to 20°C and that window opening habits are not connected to bad IAQ only uncomfortably high temperatures. People cannot recognise when their ability to work has been reduced because of poor indoor air.

Filters make do difference to perception, however they do assist maintaining a healthy indoor environment.

UK recent results; keep the temperature constant but increasing the standard 1 l/s/p classrooms ventilation (which gave CO2 values in excess of 5,000 ppm) and increasing it to 8 l/s/p and showing, (using quick diagnostic tests used by psychologists) that there was an improvement in the ability to do these tests (but it is not possible to compare directly to the work done by Professor Wyon, as he used school work comparisons). This backed up the work Professor Wyon and his colleagues have been doing for years.

A last point from the presentation was that source control is really the key to solving a lot of IAQ problems and providing ventilation to cope with what cannot be removed or reduced.

A welcomed coffee break and a chance for the speakers to meet the audience gave plenty of opportunity to discuss and exchange opinions and it was put to good use in a mixture of questions to both speakers.
