Datacenter in the Nordics a role model to help to achieve the global environmental goals?

Data centers are encouraged to reduce energy consumption by:

  • Right equipment for the purpose (consolidated IT-environments for example in high density data center clusters), high-efficient hardware for servers and for the supporting system
  • Management control systems

How can we produce more data per kW? You need to use energy in smart and efficient way. Re-use of energy cane be done with using heat exchanger on the return of the hot water from datacenter (district heating). Also re-use of the return of warm/hot water from the datacenter (for other purposes). It has been already done in the Nordics.

Datacenter in the Nordics a role model to help to achieve the global environmental goals?

We have to use more renewable energy, focus more on task efficiency, yet we do it on small scales with good results and we need to do it on a bigger scale with even better results.

Small datacenter can be coupled with apartment building and provide energy. This solution can be scaled up, capacity is there and it is all about capability.

The challenge is to couple the waste energy and supply it to the other businesses. For example: datacenter coupled with district heating, or apartments, or offices, or greenhouses (agriculture projects) or swimming arenas, etc. Greenhouses and swimming arenas are the most expensive facilities to warm up, but it can be done with energy from datacenter.

“Are Datacenters in the Nordics a Role Model to Help us Achieve the Global Environmental Goals?” is a very interesting presentation by Roberto Söderhall presented at the Data Center Forum in Copenhagen 2016.
