Definitions of sustainability, circularity and resilience
This is to help us To understand how we accomplish for a sustainable and resilient future, we need to first understand the definitions of three words: sustainability, circularity and resilience.
Sustainability consists of fulfilling current generations' continuous needs without compromising future generations' needs, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being. It seeks to prevent the depletion of natural resources.
Circularity is the economic concept of reusing or regenerating resources. It is an alternative to the traditional linear 'take-make-waste' model, aiming to extend the use of products and materials through various methods, such as reuse, repair, remanufacturing, refresh, revitalise and recycling.
Resilience refers to the ability to withstand, adapt to and recover from various stressors, including natural disasters, environmental changes, and human-induced events. Building directly focuses on a building's capacity to withstand the unexpected.
We must transform every element of our take-make-waste system: how we manage resources, how we make and use products, and what we do with the materials afterwards. Only then can we create a thriving circular economy that can benefit everyone within the limits of our planet.— Ellen MacArthur Foundation
