Updated case study of GPP Business Park: tri-generation system, BREEAM Outstanding and indoor air quality!

GPP Businees Park in Katowice, Poland is also known as Goeppert-Mayer office building, named after a Nobel laureate. The business park consists of four buildings with area of  7,800 m² (in year 2012 on out of four buildings completed). The completed building has office spaces, conference rooms, apartment and cafeteria. BREEAM rating: Outstanding was rewarded to this building. The GPP building has an innovative new tri-generation system. This system, fueled by natural gas,  is used to generate electricity, heating and cooling, the building’s entire energy demand. The main advantages of tri-generation include significant energy savings and low greenhouse gas emissions. Other low carbon solutions will include advanced facades system, chilled beams and central humidification system which will all be managed by the innovative Building Management System (BMS). The building’s energy use will be approximately 50% lower in comparison to a standard A class office building. The projected primary energy demand of the building – less than 100 kWh/(m².a) (in a reference building – 260 kWh/(m².a)) Primary energy for heating and ventilation is 28 kWh/(m².a). The amount of fresh air is 20% higher – 36 m³/h/person (in a reference building – 73 kWh/(m².a)).

Environmental features are: tri-generation – to annually deliver over 1,547 MWh of electricity (100% of the building’s demand), permanent monitoring of thermal comfort, highly-efficient heat recovery system and air-conditioning systems based on heating and cooling beams. Advanced system of facades has automatically controlled blinds integrated with the light intensity control system which guarantee access to daylight to all building users including energy-efficient lighting system with light intensity sensors – minimum 40% energy savings. Energy-efficient offices’ humidification system is designed and built to minimize the risk of microbial contamination. The building has energy-efficient lifts with energy recovery function, rainwater recycling and secondary utilization system, charging stations for electric vehicles and it uses certified materials with low content of environmentally-harmful compounds (VOC), derived from certified sources and produced with limited CO2 emissions.

The office building Maria GoeppertMayer in Katowice uses the latest technology and it is designed to provide the highest power efficiency while maintaining a high comfort and good indoor climate. This article describes the ventilation system, tri-generation, and BMS system. The BREEAM Outstanding certification is also describes including the main points of focus: HEA7 – Potential for natural ventilation, HEA8 – Indoor air quality, HEA9 – Volatile Organic Compounds, HEA10 – Thermal comfort, HEA11 –Thermal zoning, and HEA12 – Microbial contamination.
